Short animation; väliaika (intermission)

My friend shows some 16mm films and wanted to have a little piece of animated film at the end of the first reel to tell the audience about the short intermission. So, we ended up with some hand-drawn, hand-colored animations shot on 16mm film. The story idea was adopted from this game screen; www.youtube.com Background was painted with gouache paints by my friend, and animation (campfire) drawn, traced to diacetate celluloids and painted with acrylic colors by me. Then we shot this scene, as well as some others, with Canon Scoopic 16mm camera. Everything was done in one weekend, using only materials we had around. We didn't have any positive film (print or reversal), so we shot the animation on expired (2002) Fuji negative stock (125T) and custom reversal processed it as follows; 1. Rem-jet removal 2. First developer XTOL stock + carbonate to rise the pH to around 10, some extra bromide and some thiosulphate, 8 minutes at 40 degC 3. Stop, wash and light reversal 4. ECN-2 color developer 5. C-41 bleach 6. E-6 fix, wash and final rinse. This quite peculiar process gave us the orange-masked film with magentaish blacks, as you can see from this unaltered scan made with 16mm film scanner I've built. I hope to work with more animation, as it is so much fun.
